Talk abstract: Data Science at M&S: Anything But Ordinary. The 21/22 M&S autumn campaign is billed as “Anything But Ordinary”, and in this talk we will introduce the work of the anything but ordinary data science team at the company. In 2019, M&S founded a central DS team working in the new Digital & Data function in response to a five year digital transformation ambition across the whole business. In the last 2 years, the team has grown to 25 members working on a variety of data science problems. From the personalised offers you get with your Sparks card to the products stocked in your local Food Hall, our data science team are tackling multiple use cases and yet still barely scratching the surface of our aspirations within the business. What have we done and how are we doing it? In this session we will talk about what makes this not just any data science team, but an M&S data science team.

Emma’s background is in astrophysics and after completing her PhD in Oxford she worked in Italy and the US as part of supernova survey projects. Outside of work, Emma enjoys crafting new things and usually has at least 3 knitting projects on the go at any one time.
